While much of the world is using 2026, Nepal is in 2083 Bikram Sambat. The dates describe the same present day; they simply number years from different starting points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So why is Nepal\u2019s calendar about 57 years ahead? The short answer is that Nepal\u2019s main civil calendar uses the Bikram Sambat era, whose year count begins roughly 57 years before the Common Era used by the Gregorian calendar. Because the Nepali New Year begins in mid-April rather than on 1 January, the visible difference is 56 years for part of the Gregorian year and 57 years for the rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why is Nepal\u2019s calendar about 57 years ahead?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Calendars need an epoch<\/strong>: a starting point from which their years are counted. The Gregorian\/Common Era numbering and Bikram Sambat numbering use different epochs. Bikram Sambat\u2019s traditional epoch falls around 57 BCE, so its year labels are already in the high 50s when Common Era counting begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is the whole reason a modern Bikram Sambat year appears much larger. A year number is an address inside a calendar system, not a measure of how far a country has travelled into the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
